Junius Hillyer memoir, 1874-1990.

The collection consists of the two original diaries begun by Hillyer in 1874 and several copies of letters and articles relating to the publishing of the memoir. The memoir describes life on the family plantation, slavery, the family's move to Athens, Georgia in 1821, Junius' attendance at grammar school, and descriptions of activities at Franklin College (University of Georgia). Also included is information concerning a memorial dedication in 1988 at the site of the Freeman-Hillyer homeplace in Broad River Valley, Wilkes County, Georgia. Some family history, maps, and copies of letters from Wiliam Dickerson and Peter Wellborn Martin are also included.
